Toras Purim 5784 part 4: Chavilah Again

 

When we read the Haftarah today I was taken aback: Shaul smote Amalek "from Chavilah until you come to Shur." Amalek was in Chavilah!

So let us go back to the Land of Chavilah, and look at the Recanati there in Bereishis:

שם האחד פישון. מלת פישון הוא מלשון פושו וסגו רמז למים העליונים המשפיעים לבנין והוזכר תחלה שנאמר עולם חסד יבנה (תהלים פט' ג'). חוילה מלשון חויא רמז לנחש הקדמוני הבא מן הצפון. ואמר כי הנהר הראשון מקיף אותם וזהו סדר הבנין. ואמר אשר שם הזהב כמו מצפון זהב יאתה. זה"ב הזי"ן רומזת למדת החסד שבעל חסד הופך פניו לכל צד. הה"א היא ראש הגדולה שהיא כסא לחסד. הבי"ת היא רומזת לחכמה שמשם אצילות הכל

Chavilah represents the Nachash, while the Pishon represents the Chesed that engulfs and corrects the deficit caused by the Nachash. The Malbim is also not so positive on Chavilah:

כי (יא) שם האחד פישון הוא הסובב את כל ארץ החוילה, שם סמל הקנאה בביאה לבקש עושר והון רב ולאסוף אוצרות זהב, וגם באר מדוע יבקשו את הזהב וידרשו אחריו כ"כ, הוא יען אשר שם הזהב, יען שלא נמצא הזהב בכ"מ רק שם, שאם היה הזהב נמצא בכ"מ כמו שימצא הסיד והאבנים לא היה לו שום חשיבות, כי אין חשיבותו מצד עצמו רק מצד מעוט מציאותו

Albeit Chavilah is also interpreted by the Midrash in a positive light, but the Pishon is perhaps the reason why this is so. See Reb Tzadok to Rosh Chodesh Kislev #3:

 ואות ס' הוזכר בתורה ראשונה בנהרות. הוא הסובב את כל ארץ החוילה ומצינו בגמרא (בבא קמא נה.) הרואה ט' בחלומו סימן יפה לו כו', הואיל ופתח בו הכתוב לטובה תחלה כו', והיינו שאות ט' ראשונה שבתורה בתיבת כי טוב ומורה על שורש האות. וכן אות ס' ראשונה הוא הסובב, והיינו שהשם יתברך סובב ואור מקיף. ועל ידי כן סומך לכל הנופלים. וכן תמונת אות ס' הוא היקף. ואם מ"ם סתומה גם כן היקף. רק שם יש מ' פתוחה. ואות ס' הוא תמיד מקיף ומורה על אור מקיף מהשם יתברך. והוא על פי מה שאמרו (בראשית רבה פ' טז) דדרש בגליות. הוא הסובב את כל ארץ החוילה כו' ארץ ישראל דכתיב ביה הוחילי לאלהים וגו', אשר שם הזהב אלו דברי תורה כו', וזהב הארץ ההיא טוב. שאין תורה כתורת ארץ ישראל ולא חכמה כחכמת ארץ ישראל כו', עיין שם

Interstingly, the Netziv in the Ha'amek Davar is not so positive on Pishon, but is definitely positive on Chavilah:

(יב) וזהב הארץ ההיא טוב. הנה שם חוילה משמעו מלשון תוחלת ותקוה. (והכי אי' בב"ר פט"ז והביא ע"ז מקרא בתהלים הוחילי לאלהים) ובאשר שהעושה חסד ע"פ טבעו או ע"פ שכלי האנושי אע"ג שמקבל שכר מ"מ אינו דומה למי שעושה מצד שמקוה לתשלום גמול. מש"ה רמז המקום דזהב הארץ חוילה הוא טוב. דהמיחל לבטל הגמול שכרו מרובה. וזהבו טוב משארי ב"א

And perhaps even more interesting is the legend that the Sambatyon surrounds the land of Chavilah!

 ועוד סיפר לנו אלדד הנ"ל שכשחרב המקדש בראשונה עלו ישראל לבבל ועמדו הכשדים על בני משה ואמרו להם שירו לנו משיר ציון, עמדו בני משה וגעו בבכיה לפני הקב"ה וכתתו אצבעותיהם שהיו מנגנים בהם במקדש ולא רצו לנגן, ובא הענן ונשאם עם אהליהם ובהמתם והוליכם לחוילה בלילה, ובאותו הלילה היה רעש גדול ובבוקר ראו חיל גדול, והסב ה' סביבם נהר שגולל אבנים וחול במקום שלא היה שם נהר מעולם, ועדיין גולל אבנים וחול בלי מים ברעש וקולות שאפילו היה שם הר ברזל היה מנפצו. וזה בימי חול ובשבת נח ולזה נקרא נהר שבתיון, ויש מקומות באותו נהר שהוא רחב שישים אמה ולכן אין יכולין לבא אלינו ולא אנו להם. ואין ביניהם אלא בהמות וחיות טהורות

Be that all as it may, the connection to Amalek is clearly there, confirming our prior discussions!

Purim as a Yom Tov: The Meshech Chochmo

The Meshech Chochmo on Purim as 

(or not as) a Yom Tov

Toras Purim 5784 part 3: 2030 again

 In the first post in this series we wrote:

In gematria this 2030.

This is certainly correct, as the Mesillas Yesharim writes that the meaning of life is:

להתענג על הוי"ה ולהנות מזיו שכינתו

Which is also 2030 in gematria.

This meaning of life is reflected back to us by Hashem, as He says to us:

ואהבת עולם אהבתיך על כן משכתיך חסד

(Yirmiyahu 31:2)

Which is also 2030 in gematria. 

Thanks to the miracles of modern technology and secretorah.com we can note the remarkable prevalence of this number in the Megillah.

From Mordechai's defiance, to Hasach's conveying the message to Esther, the golden scepter, to the gathering of the Jews to fast and pray, to Haman's arrogance after the first party, to Haman's audience with the king, to Esther's supplication at the second party, to the preferment of the Jews, to the mention of the Pur, to the enactment of the two days of Purim, to the final words of the Megillah.

And it is clear that the pasuk in Yirmiyahu is a direct reference to the Gemara Megillah 13a:

רבי יהושע בן קרחה אמר אסתר ירקרוקת היתה

וחוט של חסד משוך עליה

(The Seforim say that Hasach was the bechinah of the Chut shel Chesed, because Hasach is Chut shel Chesed in gematria, but that is for another time.)

Now, while we are not going to get too involved in Nistar, in the Sefer Ma'alos HaSulam it is stated:

וזה נקרא תשובה כי מלכות עולה לבינה ונמתקת במדת הרחמים של בינה ומשפיעה מאורותיה הגדולים גם לעולמות בי״ע ולישראל, והדינים נמתקו ונעשו גורמים להמשכת החכמה והפחד נהפך להיות מנוחה ויקר,ומלכות מאירה מסטרא דאימא עלאה דהיינו בג״ר דחיה ואז ירוק כזהב בסוד שאחז״ל אסתר ירקרקת היתה, וזהב ירקרק, ומגיעה הארת התיקון גם לבחינת תהו שנקרא קו ירוק מצד החלל הפנוי שנעשה בצמצום א׳. והארתה מקיפה את כל העולמות והיינו קו ירוק דאסחר כל עלמא עם אורות הרחמים של אימא עלאה בסוד תשובה מאהבה שזדונות נעשו כזכיות

The "greenishness" of Esther is a greenish gold (like an esrog, but that's also for anothe time), the chesed turns the gold of Eretz HaChavilah into the chen that Esther presented to all who saw her.

"Green Gold" is called Electrum. As noted in the Seforim, it is an alloy of Silver and Gold (Chesed and Gevurah), and is therefore Tiferes.

כי הכרפס הוא בתפארת שהוא ירוק

(Chemdas HaYomim, Purim 7)

ספר הפליאה - ד"ה שם האחד פישון הוא הסובב את כל 

וזהב הארץ ההוא טוב שהתפארת נקרא טוב ומשך הו' לעולם עמה ואינם מניחים אותה עם הזהב לבדו, א"ל עד מתי תדבר, אדבר גם אני, אמת כי טוב רומז בתפארת והו' של וזהב רומז למשך הו

The vav is the chut. It is added to the zahav and makes its gevurah into tiferes. Esther with here chut shel chesed turn the gevuros into tiferes. At the end of the Galus, Hashem's love for us takes the gevuros and turns them into tiferes. And the Ziv HaShechinah will take the Green Line of the world of Tohu and create an eternal ta'anug al Hashem.

Toras Purim 5784 part 2: 42's

 

The 42nd pasuk in the Torah is:

 יא שֵׁ֥ם הָֽאֶחָ֖ד פִּישׁ֑וֹן ה֣וּא הַסֹּבֵ֗ב אֵת כָּל־אֶ֣רֶץ הַֽחֲוִילָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־שָׁ֖ם הַזָּהָֽב ׃

Now, it is crystal clear that the Torah is warning us that some people use all of their מסעות in life for a pursuit of חוילה, of matters of חולין, of gold.

But the gold has a purpose, to build the Beis HaMikdash, as the Midrash Rabbah states there:

אמר ריש לקיש: לא היה העולם ראוי להשתמש בזהב. ולמה נברא? בשביל בית המקדש, שנאמר וזהב הארץ ההיא טוב, היך מה דאת אמר (דברים ג): ההר הטוב הזה והלבנון.

Even more powerful, Vayikra Rabba 16:

אשר שם הזהב אלו דברי תורה שהם נחמדים מזהב ומפז רב.

The gold is actually a reference to Divrei Torah. No doubt in line with this Midrash:

א״ר יהושע בן לוי חוילה זו ארץ ישראל, ולמה נקרא שמה חוילה, מפני שמיחלת להקב״ה שנא׳ (תהלים מ״ב:ו׳) הוחילי לא׳ כי אודנו ישועות פניו. (מדרש פטירת משה)

That Chavilah is Eretz Yisrael, that yearns for HKB"H. But according to Rashi, the Pishon is the Nile and Chavilah is Egypt.

So it is choice: Which way do our travels take us? Towards gold, Egypt and the mundane? Or towards Torah, Eretz Yisroel and the Beis HaMikdash?

Hashem gave us a tool to guide us in our travels. The 42nd pasuk in Parashas Yisro:

(טו) וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אֶל⁠־הָעָ֔ם הֱי֥וּ נְכֹנִ֖ים לִשְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֑ים אַֽל⁠־תִּגְּשׁ֖וּ אֶל⁠־אִשָּֽׁה׃

As Rashi brings there from Chazal (Shabbos  87a), this pasuk alludes to the first manifestation of Torah she'b'Al Peh - Moshe adding an additional day of preparation to those decreed by Hashem.

Which is also the message of the 42nd pasuk in the Megillah:

(כ) אֵ֣ין אֶסְתֵּ֗ר מַגֶּ֤דֶת מֽוֹלַדְתָּהּ֙ וְאֶת⁠־עַמָּ֔הּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה עָלֶ֖יהָ מׇרְדֳּכָ֑י וְאֶת⁠־מַאֲמַ֤ר מׇרְדֳּכַי֙ אֶסְתֵּ֣ר עֹשָׂ֔ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר הָיְתָ֥ה בְאׇמְנָ֖ה אִתּֽוֹ׃

As the Malbim notes, pasuk 10 already related that Esther observed Mordechai's strictures. What is added here? Explains the Malbim, there it was when Esther was still not queen, she therefore naturally did as Mordechai commanded. Here Esther is already the Queen. Mordechai can no longer command here anything. Yet she still maintains the statement of Mordechai.

And this emphasis on Torah she'b'Al Peh is embedded in V'Dibbarata Bam.

The depth of 42 is reflected in the Ba'al Shem Tov on Parashas Mas'ei:

א. אלה מסעי בני ישראל וגו', שמעתי בשם אא"ז זללה"ה כי כל המסעות היו מ"ב, והם אצל כל אדם מיום הוולדו עד שובו אל עולמו, ולהבין זה כי מיום הלידה והוצאתו מרחם אמו הוא א) בחינת יציאת מצרים כנודע, ואחר כך נזסע ממסע למסע עד בואו לארץ החיים העליונה, וכמו שזכרנו (בפ' בהעלותך) בפסוק על פי ה' יחנו ועל פי ה' יסעו, כי הוא בחינת ב) קטנות וגדלות, ע"ש בפירוש הפסוק הנ"ל:

 וגם שמעתי מאיש אחד מיוחד, שמ"ב מסעות הוא בחינת הספירה משם מ"ב, שמלילה ראשונה של פסח עד חג השבועות, שהוא השלימות בקבלת התורה, ואף על פי שהם מ"ט יום, כל שבוע הוא בחינה אחד הכוללת כידוע, ושרשם הם מ"ב, והם מרומזים נגד המ"ב מסעות הנכתבים פה:

 ובוודאי נכתבו המסעות בתורה להורות הדרך הישר לאיש הישראלי, לידע הדרך הישר אשר ילך בו כל ימי חייו, ליסע ממסע למסע, וידוע שכל המסעות הם בחינות קדושים וטהורים, כמו ששמעתי מן אדוני אבי זקיני זללה"ה ג) בשם ס' ברית מנוחה קברות התאוה הוא בחינת החכמה, כי שם קברו את העם המתאוים, פירוש, מי שבא למדת חכמה אזי בטל ממנו כל התאוות, מרוב דבקותו בו יתברך שמו, ומזה נבין לכל המסעות שבודאי הם בחינות קדושות ומעלות רמות, וכן גם כן תבערה בודאי הוא בחינה קדושה, אך הם כאשר באו למקומות הללו נשתנה הדבר על ידי מעשיהם, ונהפך להם ללא טובה ר"ל, כמו שמפורש בתורה קברות התאוה כי שם קברו (בפ' בהעלותך) וכן שאר המסעות כפשוטן, וכן בתבערה כי בערה בם אש ה', ואם היו נוסעים ובאים למסעות הנ"ל ולא ישנו אותם במעשיהם, בודאי היה מאיר להם כל מסע ומסע באור הגנוז בתוכו, ודי בזה למבין:

והוא שאמר הכתוב אלה מסעי בני ישראל וגו' ויכתוב משה את מוצאיהם למסעיהם פי ה', פירוש, משה כתב בתורה המסעות איך הם עומדים ברומו של עולם, מתחלת יציאת האדם מרחם אמו, עד בואו לארץ החיים העליונה, כדי שידע האדם הדרך אשר ילך בה על פי ה', [אבל] ואלה מסעיהם למוצאיהם, היינו האיך שינו אותם במעשיהם ללא טובים, ולכך לא נאמר כאן על פי ה', והבן זה, וה' יורנו בדרך הישר והאמת לפניו אמן:

 ב. עוד שמעתי בשם מורי כשהלך בנסיעה הידועה, הראה לו רבו במקום זה היה מרמז הנסיעה שהיו נוסעין ישראל במדבר במסע זו, וכל נסיעת האדם מרומז בתורה וכו', וכן ד) כשנשברה לו הספינה והיה בעצבות גדול, ובא רבו ותמה עליו, והראה לו באיזה עולמות הוא עכשיו, והיו שמות אהי"ה וצרופי אהי"ה וכו', ואז התחזק בלבו למתקן בשרשן כידוע לו וכו' ודפח"ח:

Toras Purim 5784 part 1: 42, The Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything

The number 42 is, in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, the "Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything", calculated by an enormous supercomputer named Deep Thought over a period of 7.5 million years.

In gematria this 2030.

This is certainly correct, as the Mesillas Yesharim writes that the meaning of life is:

להתענג על הוי"ה ולהנות מזיו שכינתו

Which is also 2030 in gematria.

This meaning of life is reflected back to us by Hashem, as He says to us:

ואהבת עולם אהבתיך על כן משכתיך חסד

(Yirmiyahu 31:2)

Which is also 2030 in gematria.

Of course we need to explain the number 42 itself. That is easy, because of the 42 letter Name of Hashem, the 42 stations at which the nation camped on the way from Egypt to Israel, and ודברת בם.

But we also need to look at the 42nd pasuk in the Torah, the 42nd pasuk in Parashas Yisro and the 42nd pasuk in Megillas Esther.

But first, the 2030th pasuk in the Torah* is the one that commences Mattan Torah (Shemos 19:3):

ומשה עלה אל־האלקים ויקרא אליו ה' מן־ההר לאמר כה תאמר לבית יעקב ותגיד לבני ישראל

And to end off for now, the full quote from the Mesillas Yesharim is

להתענג על הוי"ה ולהנות מזיו שכינתו שזהו התענוג האמיתי והעידון הגדול מכל העידונים שיכולים להמצא

that is 4414 in gematria.

Which is also:

והימים האלה נזכרים ונעשים בכל־דור ודור משפחה ומשפחה מדינה ומדינה ועיר ועיר וימי הפורים האלה לא יעברו מתוך היהודים

(Esther 9:28)

BTW, the 4414th pasuk in the Torah* is Bamidbar 24:14...
