I usually follow the Republican line on social and economic issues. But it appears that my position on this issue is to the left of all.
Assault rifles are weapons of mass destruction and should be banned from ownership by any civilian. We don't allow people to buy TNT, anthrax, cyanide, or a nuclear bomb either. The only mental illness we should be talking about is that of advocating for widespread public ownership of these weapons. No rational, civilized country, including Israel, allows the breadth of these weapons to be owned publicly. Tell me how policeman with pistols are going to stop a wacko with a bullet proof vest, hundreds of bullets, and an assault rifle. They won't, and they didn't in Buffalo or Uvalde.
Secondly, the same groups are encouraging unchecked private gun sales, and gun shows, and homemade gun kits from parts, 3-D printed guns, and semi-auto to full-auto conversion kits, all with a wink of the eye.
If it means revising the second amendment, so be it. The constitution also allowed slavery and somehow the country was able to overcome that. No thanks to the Civil War forced on the country by the Confederacy.
Hmmm. Seems like the politicians from the same states are also the roadblock today.
