I think the issues are items ג-ז.
ReplyDeleteAnd I think it's fair for a Hassidic school not to want secularizing influences in their daughter's classmates.
We should note that three of those sent to jail are themselves Sepharadi, as is 27% of the school. So regardless of the nature of the rules and whether it means the only Sepharadi who would use it is intending to assimilate... (It is a *Chassidic* school in a town with other Batei Yaakov, after all.) There is no reason to believe it was this girl's Sepharadi heritage that caused her rejection.

But thanks for reminding me why I don't read Haemtza blog.
ReplyDeleteG'Shabbos!

Ah, one more thing... This is not Emmanuel's big Beis Yaakov, this is a break-away Beis Yaakov Chassidi. Given that, is it odd to see support for Chassidishe Minhagim in their by-laws?
ReplyDeleteSee this Jerusalem Post article.

The point of my swipe at Haemtza is that right or wrong, you know in advance that 2/3 of the posts are a bunch of MO Jews rubbing their hands in glee at whatever fault they could find in chareidim.
ReplyDeleteYour opinion that the fault is real doesn't make that kind of behavior much less loathsome.
If RHM wants to promote the Torah as R' Aharon Soloveitchik taught it, why not spend all that effort building up that perspective and that community rather than trying to tear down yenem?

Micha,
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid you have not been briefed accurately as to the facts. I am forwarding you the Supreme Court's ruling under separate cover. If anyone wants it, I have it (in Hebrew) in PDF format.
Thanks for providing all of that important material. Anyway, it is very depressing.
ReplyDeleteCould you please summarize the courts opinion in a few english sentences?
ReplyDeleteThe entire decision (in English)can be read here: http://elyon1.court.gov.il/files_eng/08/670/010/o24/08010670.o24.pdf
ReplyDeleteI'm glad YGB considers himself wiser that all the Sages of Israel.
ReplyDeleteHAHAHA, Joseph you are a hoot and a holler.
ReplyDeleteExactly my thoughts Joseph.
ReplyDeleteIt's all about how you frame the terms of the debate.
ReplyDeleteIn reality, this is about a State funded school being segregated by a special interest group.
However, the Chareidi PR team has changed that into one of State coercion of religious practice.
NO ONE is saying that the Slonimers cannot educate their precious white-skinned princesses in their own particular way. What they are saying is that if they're going to take Israel's money to run their school, they have to abide by Israel's rules. By taking the money and then refusing to recognize the authority of the State they display an incredible hypocrisy that everyone else but they and their supporters gets infuriated by.
Grow up, people. Don't be impressed by the gedolim who demonstrated or who declined to disapprove of demonstrations. Some were upset because they absolutely oppose the state's involvement, some were afraid their sfardi grandchildren would be kicked out of the ashkenazi schools they barely got in to, and so on.
