The local public library lends some videos via download, and yesterday we downloaded and watched "Paper Clips"

Plot Summary for Paper Clips
Whitwell Middle School in rural Tennessee is the setting for this documentary about an extraordinary experiment in Holocaust education. Struggling to grasp the concept of six-million Holocaust victims, the students decide to collect six-million paper clips to better understand the extent of this crime against humanity. The film details how the students met Holocaust survivors from around the world and how the experience transformed them and their community.

I do not see how this kind of altruistic behavior can lead to anything short of a rejection of the Tanya's premise.

(The movie also demonstrates the positive role played by non-Orthodox Jews - an issue that Reb Tzadok grappled with in Tzidkas HaTzaddik that the Sefas Emes had censored out of the original printing - they went and represented us all in places we could not ourselves go.)

  1. Not to argue, as I agree with your post, that Umos Ha'Olam can be and have demonstrated countless altruistic deeds, I do question if you are rejecting your position that Hesed Leumim Hatas was specific to pagans, and if so, why can't the Tanya refer to pagans (or a modern equivalent - not sure what that would be, though) as well?

  2. The common understanding of the Tanya is that he is even referring to monotheistic ummos. I think this almost undoubtedly the case, as he does not distinguish on the basis of theology, as I did, but on the basis of the nature of the neshama - in which he admits of only two classifications: Ummos and Yisroel.

  3. The Tanya made the same impression on me that he's speaking of all non-Jews. But I note his lashon actually is "ovedei gelulim"...

The Kuzari is even more "racist" -- he includes geirim, which is why they are "kasheh"!

But one wonders how the Baal haTanya understands "yaft E-lokim leYefes". Or "ki miTzion teitzei Sorah". Or "mamlekhes kohanim" -- if we're the "kohanim", who is the "am"?

Like RYGB, I am adherent of the kind of TIDE that stresses not only our use of secular culture, but our duty to contribute its moral voice. It's a very different attitude toward umos ha'olam than those who speak of them as props on our stage.

  4. I assume Ovdei Gilulim either includes Ma'aminei Ha'Shilush or that it's censorship.

IIRC, the Kuzari says that geirim are of a lower status in terms of ruach hakodesh, not anywhere near the

  5. Bold comments, YGB, bold indeed!

The current Rosh Y of one of your alma matters (NIRC), Rav A F shlita, was confronted by bale batim in passaic when he made disparaging remarks about morality of goyim with whom we interact in the workplace. He did not retract but those in attendence had similar day-to-day experiential impressions that cannot be contradicted by "Shteit Ah Zoy in Seforim"

  9. With all due respect...the Baal HaTanya didn't mnke up what he said...and he and his sources are a lot bigger than anyone alive today, even if they are erudite Talmidei Chachamim who write spectacular seforim on Eiruvin. No doubt he would say the paperclip project was L'His'yaheir, as well.
At most, one could say, "I am not zocheh to understand the Devarim Kedoshim of the Tanya in light of these seemingly selfless non-Jews."

  10. Wait, you're watching movies in order to refute arguments in Tanya? You do realize the quandary you've put me in, right? :)

  11. "IIRC, the Kuzari says that geirim are of a lower status in terms of ruach hakodesh, not anywhere near the שאר קליפות טמאות status."

What about the novi ovadiah who chazal say was a ger edomi?

(he goes on, but you get the idea...)

  13. Proof for the Tanya:

"Despite the fact that they had previously been unaware of and unfamiliar with the Holocaust, their dedication was absolute. Their plan was simple but profound. The amazing result, a memorial railcar filled with 11 million paper clips (representing 6 million Jews and 5 million gypsies, homosexuals and other victims of the Holocaust)...

  14. I think I am missing something. What is the proof for the Tanya? That they put in 11m instead of only 6m paper clips?

  15. You wanted to prove that one can find pure altruism by umos haolam. In fact, it isn't only the Tanya who says so but the chazal and the Ari, but I digress. Anyway, the fact that these akum collected paper clips for Mishkav Zachurniks shows that they were not looking to commemorate the destruction of Jews or lehavdil innocent akum, but rather that these students have been swept up into the whole Holocaust religion. This religion has basically been used as a shtempel for mishkav zachur. The words of chazal are proven -- the reason they have turned the holocaust into a religion is to say that we can never make value judgments -- because that would be discrimination, heaven forfend. The point is that the whole Holocaust thing has been used to justify fulfilling taavos.

  16. They didn't collect the pins for the MZniks - they collected them for the Jews but had many left over. 11 million was a good number. Most of these Bible Belt Christians find MZ as horrendous as you.
