Tachlis

In an exchange concerning the Satmer Rebbe zt"l, I received the following two related comments:

You as a rabbi who can learn surprise me. Does someone choose a car on its color alone. You dismiss the SR because of his 'color'. The way he writes about others. If you want to pasken a halacha if zionism is correct or not you should go by his reasons, what difference does it make how he 'terms' others. Either his 'lomdus' is correct or it isnt. What he calls others who dont agree with him is neither here nor there.

You may say that you havent 'denigrated' him, but you have made sure that others on here and on RHM'S blog have. Most calling him much more vile names than he ever called anyone. Do you really think this is a great mitsva what you are doing. Just because they are all am haarazim not realising his greatness is not an excuse. You seem to have too many threads running at once. Perhaps you close one about this.

NO WRONG.

I gave the example of a car. People like you and the rest of the posters here and on RHM who have absolutely no knowledge of torah would buy it on its color. The outside trappings. A Rabbi who can learn like the owner of this blog ought to know better. He should be looking at the substance of his arguments against zionism before disparaging him not at his color or his actions.

Why should anyones actions whatever they may be, be proof to his shittos.

This comment reminded me of a story of Reb Tzadok and the Rogatchover related in the short biography at the beginning of Sichas Malachei HaShareis.

Free translation:

Later, in the days of his [Reb Tzadok's] greatness, when the famous Gaon R' Yosef Rosen shlita, ABD"K Denenburg was with him and wanted to engage in pilpul with him, Reb Tzadok told him that the berachah of Atah Chonen, when it was enacted by the Anshei Knesses HaGedolah, they did not have in mind that it should relate to achieving greater magnitudes of pilpul. Nevertheless, continued Reb Tzadok, since one's travels are directed by Hashem, perhaps he [the Rogatchover] was brought to him [Reb Tzadok, to receive the following message:] "While your honor is an illui [prodigy], you should know that I too was an illui [to the extent] that even when I was very young I bested all the Gedolim with whom I engaged in pilpul. [Earlier in the biography it was mentioned that the famous Gaon R' Yitzchok Elchonon Spector zt"l, ABD"K Kovno had come to visit the young R' Tzadok and converse in Torah.] Nevertheless, I later saw that it is impossible to merit the crown of Torah until one grabs hold of [and opens] the door of the students of Rabbeinu HaBesht zy"a.

Now, I am a big "fan" of Reb Tzadok, but in the final analysis remain a Misnaged (or, according to Chabad, let us say "Olam'she).

So I would suggest that in my fantasy world - in which the Mussar Movement still exists - we would paraphrase that last line on the basis of the Gra, Mishlei 4:13):

And, in truth, no paraphrasing is necessary, for the Rebbe, Reb Elimelech of Lizhensk zt"l writes in the Tzetel Katan:

Once upon a time - in my youth - the commenter's position would have resonated with me. Lomdus is the ikkar - the engine and the transmission - everything else tafel - the color and the trim. But as I become more advanced in years (the big 5-0 coming up in 40 days - sooner by the secular calendar!), it becomes clear to me, that middos are the engine and transmission, and the lomdus - geschmak as it is - is the color and the trim.

Hence, a shittah that manifests Deracheha Darchei Noam v'kol Nesivoseha Shalom rings true. Nikkarim divrei emes. A shittah that manifests kitrug and kintur... well...

BTW, I found a wonderful essay on this topic (mostly from a Litvishe perspective, but with some token Chassidus):

  1. I am somewhat learned in Torsh, but I definitely used car color as one of the deciding factors when trading up from a mommy van to something more practical and fuel efficient for my soon-to-be empty nest life.

My son went car shopping with me a few times, and commented that the sedan I was looking at was "a grandma color". I fell in love with my bright red Honda fit the moment I saw it! (Then read about it, researched it, talked to other Fit owners, and put down a down payment.)

More on topic ..... I'd love to see the Orthodox world in general learn to love and respect all of Am Yisroel.

  2. Please excuse my ignorance. Having read your long post about breaking middos and how important it is, even dealing with an 'enemy' which I am not in the inyan and dont understand. You are supposed to 'hate' him it seems but even this person you are supposed to hate, you are supposed to help. I know you will be able to explain in 'words' that he you have to believe he is still Jewish etc. I imagine its talking about someone who has not done tshuva at all otherwise no chiddush. You make it sound so simple, but that is because you dont believe you really have to hate him. This is supposed to be a difficult concept, not a simple one.
What has that to do with the subject of SR. Or with my car analogy. Or is it not supposed to have to do with it.

  4. Your post is nothing but a distraction. The Satmar Rav was the epitome of righteousness, between man and man as well as between man and G-d. His Halachic opinion about R. Kook was that he deserved the things he wrote about him. It was not due to hate of Midos or Tevah. You are talking about someone whose self-discipline was legendary. Someone who had "broken his tevah" more than anyone else you will ever meet in your life. His description of Rav Kook, YOU say, was due to some Midos issue, as opposed to what he has stated in those letters, that Halachicly Rav Kook does not deserve more. He paskened that Rav Kook was a spreader of heretical ideas and godol hamachtio yoser min hahargo. The titles he wrote about him are fitting according to his Halachic opinion. The source of your Chutzpah is making believe you can get into his mind and determine what motivated him. The truth, to anyone who knows anything about him, is that his Torah motivated him. And he certainly did not enjoy what he needed to do, but he needed to do it nevertheless. You have exposed not the SR but yourself. And what you have exposed about yourself is not pretty.

  6. Hence, a shittah that manifests Deracheha Darchei Noam v'kol Nesivoseha Shalom rings true. Nikkarim divrei emes. A shittah that manifests kitrug and kintur... well...,
So that is your guidelines of how to pasken a shaalah.
No need for the Torah at all. You might as well do away with the lot.
Funny moshe rabainu had enough kitrug and kintur from korach etc. So of course his shitta cant be correct.
Believe me you sound like a christian.

  7. You would pasken a shaala of traifus by asking the 'dog'. If he didnt eat it its kosher.
Your whole post taken from Carmel and Miller two am haarazim with Slifkin together. This shows what learning mussar before torah does. You dont believe in torah anymore where it conflicts with your 'ethics'.
Torah is not supreme your own 'modern' mind is. So where it conflicts the torah has to go. All this mussar you quote is after having learnt torah not before. Lo am hoorets chosid means exactly that.

  8. To Anon 1/25 8:29am: Thank you for voicing this and restoring some sanity to the discussion. I share your impression of the Satmar Rav, and your surprise in RYGB. RYGB would be hard pressed to find one of his Rabbeim sharing his reaction to this issue.

  9. "Either his 'lomdus' is correct or it isn't."

I agree with this. Al HaGeulah V'al HaTemurah is not a work of lomdus by any means. It's a polemic.

VaYoel Moshe, on the other hand at least attempts to be a halachic work. Still, the "lomdus" falls apart with a little scrutiny. Consider how the SR explains why the Rambam didn't codify the Three Oaths in his Mishneh Torah. He does this by essentially admitting that the Rambam argues with his own extreme anti-Zionist shitta. Why does he only quote half the gemara in Yoma where a full quotation would refute his premise?

  10. What has that to do with the subject of SR. Or with my car analogy. Or is it not supposed to have to do with it.

It has to do with what is the ikkar and what is the tafel in choosing a "moreh derech."

The Satmar Rav was the epitome of righteousness, between man and man as well as between man and G-d.

To me, the epitome of righteousness is R' Aryeh Levin zt"l.

His Halachic opinion about R. Kook was that he deserved the things he wrote about him.

When Chazal were confronted with someone that contradicted the Ikkarei Emunah they still called him "Rabbi" [Hillel] and simply said "Sharah lei marei." There is no Halachic precedent for such a letter as the SR issued against RAYHK.

RHM writes on his blog that YOU and him believe that the SR was the most damaging figure of the 20th century. Can you respond to that.

I do not believe he was the most damaging figure of the 20th century. And he is responsible for much good. And in his personal hanhogos a tzaddik. But how anyone who is not either:

    1. A "tinok she'nishba" having been born into Satmar, or,

    2. A person who has a yetzer for kana'us,

can be attracted to him as a "moreh derech" is beyond me.

So that is your guidelines of how to pasken a shaalah.

No, these are not guidelines of how to pasken a she'ailah. They are guidlines of how to choose a role model and figure to emulate.

Funny moshe rabainu had enough kitrug and kintur from korach etc. So of course his shitta cant be correct.

You totally misunderstood me. Aderaba, because Korach was mekatreig and mekanteir there were raglayim la'davar that he was wrong.

Torah is not supreme your own 'modern' mind is. So where it conflicts the torah has to go. All this mussar you quote is after having learnt torah not before. Lo am hoorets chosid means exactly that.

Firstly, I do not know how you can construe the Gra and the Noam Elimelech as products of my "modern" mind. Secondly, so far as I know they are part of Torah, so the Torah is not "going" anywhere. Thirdly, you are not correct about middos and mussar coming only after Torah (the Chida says they are a prerequisite for Torah), but that's irrelevant. If anything, the question is how a person like the SR who was malei v'gadush Torah could be so full of malice and animosity.

RYGB would be hard pressed to find one of his Rabbeim sharing his reaction to this issue.

My Rabbeim did not teach precious, holy Ba'alei Teshuvah, nor impressionable, raw - but also precious - "Modern Orthodox" youth. I do. And both audiences are confused and demoralized when they see a monolithic "Charedi" world which seems to have fallen on its head, and where the old distinctions between, say, Agudas Yisroel and Edah Charedis, were clear, with the one repudiating the other and vice versa.

The only way to prevent "Charedism" sliding towards massive Chillul Hashem in the eyes of other Orthodox Jews, is by iterating the differentiation. It is imperative that someone state, clearly, that the SR's categorization of, say, talmidim and avreichim in Merkaz HaRav, as "minim" or "kofrim" who may not be counted in a minyan was arrogant and nasty - no matter what his personal tzidkus was, and it was great - and ipso facto, wrong. If no one else can say it because of whatever unpleasant political alliances or other negi'os they may have, or because in their oilem it is not necessary to discuss these things, then b'makom she'ein ish hishtadel liyos ish.

  11. I don't like to beat a dead horse, however, if you look in Teshuvos maharsham Chelek 7 Siman 48 he clearly explains that even the greatest people can be wrong and lead peiople astray. We have an obligation to use our intelligence before we simply accept what appears to be improper. It is a disaster, perhaps one of the great disasters of our tiime that we accept that certain people are gedolim, and as a result thye have to be right. No intelligent person could believe such a thing.

  12. So have we understood it now.
You have no idea of the arguments for or against zionism. Youre not even interested. You just look at two things. First of all, of the two 'rabbis' the one who is less kanoi, or in your terms mekanter in a personal way is right.
Then you look at the subject itself, the one who 'includes' more Jewish people is right.
What a way to pasken a shaalah!
Again why do we need a torah. With 'rabbis' like you its unnecessary. We might as well use 'dogs'.

    Are you serious?!

    You are serious, aren't you?

Yet surely you are aware of the Chasam Sofer (and Rav Elchonon, by inference) that R' Hillel was not considered an Apikores despite his rejecting the Ikarim, since they were not yet codified.

So what are you talking about?

No Halachic precedent? On the contrary - Bemakom chilul hashme ain cholkin kavod lerav.

The very notion of you saying "there is no halachic precedent" bespeaks an arrogance that explains your position on this.

No Halachic precedent? On the contrary - Bemakom chilul hashme ain cholkin kavod lerav.

You are taking the Gemara out of context. It means that hanhogos one is not noheig because of Kibbud Rabbo one is noheig b'makom Chillul Hashem - but it is a temporary and limited license. It does not allow for personal attacks on the Rav.

A big Modeh al HaEmes you are not.

RHM is no agudist. Except when it comes to SR like midian bsdeh moab you unite. He writes as though you agree to all what he says. But you have admitted otherwise. I wonder if he reads your blog and the comments.
He now really believe himself to be a godol hador and states that he expects everyone to follow him. Perhaps he is for the MO they have no one else. Yiftach bdoro. We still have R Elyashiv shlita amongst others, to fight against the Carmel, Miller Slifkin axis. Slifkin has himself written that he is 'post' chareidi and moving further down but you still give him recognition.
My posts are not about who is right regarding zionism but on the way you pasken shaalos which appear to me to be with going along with the herd.
You havent at all replied to that. I would have thought that was the subject of this post.

No. Not that any of this is remembered except by a few eccentrics such as myself, but that was the great issue between R' Yaakov Rosenheim and Dr. Isaac Breuer. The position you attribute to me is actually that of R' Yaakov Rosenheim. Mine is the position of Dr. Breuer.

RHM is no agudist. Except when it comes to SR like midian bsdeh moab you unite. He writes as though you agree to all what he says. But you have admitted otherwise. I wonder if he reads your blog and the comments.

Whether he is an Agudist or not, is not germane. And we certainly have had disagreements, although we agree more often than not. So, indeed, there are generally at least nuances of distinction between our positions.

My posts are not about who is right regarding zionism but on the way you pasken shaalos which appear to me to be with going along with the herd.

I think I will have to do another post distinguishing between the decision of a halachic issue and the selection of a moreh derech. Since B"H we are making a Bar Mitzva this Shabbos, I am not sure I will get to it today, v'id chazon la'moed. Soon, IY"H.

I suppose one could be a zionist or anti-zionist without any hatred. Just because the SR also has hatred does it make his position of anti-zionist wrong.

Not necessarily. That is why I need to do another post to explain the differentiation kana"l.

  24. Oh yes. Divrei Yoel Choshen Mishpat #146.

It says no such thing there. Please quote the words you are referencing.

Your dishonesty is that you are trying to make this an issue of Midos. It is nothing of the sort.

The SR paskened that R. Kook is not deserving of Kovod and that he crossed the line into the area occupied by the likes of Shabse Zvi and similar others, who also was a great Talmid Chacham.

Assuming his psak is correct he has more than ample halachic precedent to refer to R. Kook the way he did.

Had he viewed R. Kook as a mistaken person he never would have spoken of him that way. You are disagreeing with his psak.

But this is not a Midos issue. It is an issue of Halachah - the Halachic status of someone like R. Kook with R. Kook's beliefs.

Your trying to make this into a Midos issue is frankly, quite repulsive, but I honestly believe your narrow minded view cannot see it that way.

  25. BY way of preempting your mistaken response to my last post, may I remind you of the distinction that the Maharitz Hyajes made regarding the conservative rabbis and their followers.

Because the SR said we should exclude the Mizrachim of almost 100 years ago from a minyan has no bearing on the students in Merkaz Harav today.

If you want to be honest why don't you pose that question to one of the Satmar Dayanim or Rabbonim and see if they agree with your interpretation of the SR or not.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Perhaps I should rephrase my question again.
All religions hate each other. Ain sinah ksinas hadas. Tiferes yisroel says it somewhere.
If they dont they are not passionate about it. That is the nature of religion and more wars are fought about it than anything else.
The SR held zionism to be against the 'yesodos' hadas. So of course not different to anyone else he hated them.
You who are some type of zionist, call it the Breuer type although he would not use the word zionist if you dont hate the anti zionist its either because you are not passionate in your beliefs or you dont consider it the yesodos.
When the bachurim of the mizrachi yeshiva were killed lately even Satmar spoke against it. Their hatred is all your making.

  27. To equate RAYHK to SZ sr"y is either obtuse or nasty. Take your pick. :-)

  28. Because the SR said we should exclude the Mizrachim of almost 100 years ago from a minyan has no bearing on the students in Merkaz Harav today.

Out of curiosity, I looked up some Romanian Mizrachi Rabbis of the time.

They don't seem to be particularly wicked, or am I missing something?

If you want to be honest why don't you pose that question to one of the Satmar Dayanim or Rabbonim and see if they agree with your interpretation of the SR or not.

I hope they don't!

  29. Perhaps I should rephrase my question again...

This comment is so objectionable, I don't know how to begin to respond to it.

Just for the record, IIRC Aaron said something and Zalman Leib critcized him for it.

  30. Are you saying that when choosing a "moreh derech" the politeness which they exhibit is more important than the views which they espouse?

Would you say Moses Mendelssohn was a more appropriate "moreh derech" than those who burned his biur and spoke strongly against it?

(Unlike other commenters, it seems, I'm not trying to attack you; I'm trying to figure out what you're saying.)
(By the way, I enjoy reading your blog. Thank you.)

  31. That is exactly what he is saying. See my earlier example of how to pasken traifos.
The torah 'drocheho darkai noam'. That can only mean what you have just written.
Not sure what you want to prove from your mizrachi list.
The SR brothers in law were also mizrachi.

  32. In sum it can be said that tho who believe the Satmar Rav was "a pillar of righteousness" do not allow any discussion of evidence which raises questions about this conclusion. There is nothing you can say to justify your position because even if he physically assaulted his opponents, and even if those opponents were bona fide gedolai yisroel, they would hide behind "bemokom sheyesh cillu hashem." Never mind that that statement is a halacha in Hilchos edus and can never be used to insult whoever agrees with you. The problem is that we have bequeatheed to our children a heritage that certain peole have to be right. Apparently this applies, in their minds to those they consider gedolim. It does not necessarily apply to HKBH himself. Go Figure.

  35. All the Anons commenting here let me ask you a question. Was Zionism the reason why the Satmar rebbe fought with so many rabbanim in the heim? Or maybe there was an underlying personality issue, after all? I could, if you would like, provide a list of these squabbles, and we can then discern if these rabbanim where Zionist or not. I think this would be most illuminating.

  36. David your comment is right on the mark Given the tendency of so many people inour community to dig up the past of some leaders, especially the Lubavitcher Rebbe, but also others, it is amazing that the SR has gotten such a free ride. This shows that in our community you never attack anyone on the right. Good Luck

  37. RHM just wont leave the SR alone. He now 'compares' him to the zionists.
You YGB who started him on this track have a lot to answer for.

The views are certainly more important in the cheshbon. When one is unsure as to the views, the rhetoric is a form of evidence. Divrei Chachamim b'nachas nishma'im. If they are not nishma'im b'nachas, then their is a rei'usa - not a tiyuvta, but a rei'usain the chochma of the views.

BTW, you will be hard pressed to find a contemporary of MM who wrote about him with the same nastiness with which the SR wrote about RAYHK.

  39. Not sure what you want to prove from your mizrachi list.

You say the Mizrachisten in the Heim were worse that heintige Mizrachniks, the intimation being that if I knew who they were, I would understand why the SR banned them for being counted in a minya, Well here are a few of those a'mol'dik Mizrachisrten. I don't see anyone here any more rau'i to ban than heint'dike Mizrachistin.

So youre saying if you dont understand the subject go by the rhetoric. At least youre modeh al hoemes that you dont understand the subject.
Shame on you. It doesnt sound like a talmid chochom speaking.
Similar to your other crazy ideas mentioned in my posts above. One that is more inclusive and darchai noam is right.
Can you tell us who gave you semicha and if he also uses the same method to pasken shaalos.

  41. Anon – You have not answered my query. Was the bitter machlokas that the Satmar rebbe had with the many rabbanim in the hiem like the Keren L’Dovid also because of Zionism? Or maybe it was just his personality?

    ReplyDelete
  42. David, i think you need to understand that there are people who are terrified that, if we allow ourselves to ask these kinds of questions, many people will not be able to believe that our gedolim our in Himmel, and that The ribbono shel olom obeys them. We hav arrived at this situation because we have allowed the Spirit of the Torah to be replaced by Daas Torah and other such artificial constructs which make it impossible to see the emes.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I am not referring to this issue. I would argue that the Satmar rebbe is unique. He did not build his Chassidus on being a Satmarer, but only on not being one of the others. This created a system of hate unparalleled in our history.

    ReplyDelete
  44. there is no doubt that his system created unnecesssary animosity and mistrust between Jews for no good reason. I question whether this was unparralleled in our history. There was an awful lot of machlokes shelo leshem shomayim in the towns and villages of Europe and many otherwise superior indicvidual were unable to resist the allure of such a way of life, especially because it was frequently the easisest and quckest route to becoming famous and achieving influence.

    ReplyDelete
  45. My point is that his system was not a reason for being, but only for not being. This was unique. Furthermore, most quarrels of yesteryear were internal in nature. They were about maintaining control over ones followers, which is somewhat understandable. The Satmar rebbe’s incessant conflicts were external in nature. They were about controlling the followers of other rabbanim and rabbiem, for which there is no excuse.

  46. From a correspondent, part 1:

Satmar: Living in Israel forbidden On anniversary of Satmar Hasidism founder's death, sect publishes list of questions and answers on how to relate to Zionism Kobi Nahshoni In honor of the 31st anniversary of the death of first leader of the Satmar Hasidism anti-Zionist sect, Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum, a number of his followers published a pamphlet in his memory containing sixty questions and their answers regarding the rabbi's zealous attitude towards the State of Israel. The pamphlet is entitled "Ish Milhamot" (Man of Wars). It is intended to act as a guide for the perplexed Hassid. In its own words, it provides "clear answers to those seeking the truth to questions and queries over the test of time so the current generation will know the path it should take." According to the Satmar rebbe, Zionism is a total violation of the Torah. "If we were to take all the violations of the generation and the many transgressions committed around the world and placed them on one side of a scale and the Zionist state on the other side, it would be overwhelmingly decided that it is root of all impurity and damage in the entire world and contaminates the entire world," the rebbe wrote in the pamphlet.

    ReplyDelete
  47. part 2:

Angel of Death and the Zionists In response to the question "Who is the minister of the Zionists in Heaven?", the rabbi answered in a response from the previous century, "Obviously the Angel of Death is their minister. Behold, every country has its governor… this country, which is rooted and based in the forces of impurity and the Other Side, this certainly is its minister." The pamphlet also outlines: Even those who believe that a Jewish state must exist in the Land of Israel having no other choice because of pikuach nefesh (saving a life) "violate the holy Torah." The pamphlet directs readers to the Tractate of Avot, saying that the sentence "every man is judged favorably" is said about everyone except Zionists. In addition, it asserts that it is a mitzvah to speak lashon hara (slander) about Zionists. "Whoever has a part in this is delaying redemption at every moment and is delaying the inspiration of the Divine Presence and is delaying the coming of the Messiah. Even someone who takes the smallest part, even as slight as the edge of a yod (the tenth and smallest letter of the Hebrew alphabet)… even someone who bends towards them, even by one hair, must be avoided like a bowshot. Whoever thinks yes (that Zionism is the correct path) and not just whoever says yes or even has a thought to this effect, is certainly a heretic." The rabbi added, "I do not want to have any association with a Jew who thinks like this, and I do not want to find anyone who thinks like this even for a moment in my beit midrash (house of study)… In previous generations, if people only suspected of someone that he has tendencies to think this way in his heart, he was sent away, not included in prayer, and in this manner was they ride themselves of such plight." 'Even in times of war'

    ReplyDelete
  48. part 3:

The pamphlet's authors quoted a number of extreme statements made by their rabbi and translate them into practical halachic instructions. For instance, prayer rallies held by Religious Zionists or haredim must not be attended, even in a time of war; the rulings of great Torah scholars who recognize Israel must not be followed, saying they are the root of all of Israel's troubles. "Truly, if it were possible, and even with true devotion, to announce to the nations of the world that these evil people are not the representatives of Israel and Torah- and mitzvoth-keeping Jews, who have no connection to them, this would be one of the biggest mitzvoth that would need to be carried out with devotion," it was written in the pamphlet. Zionism, according to Rebbe Teitelbaum, will not last forever. The following is a translation from his writings in Yiddish. "The Messiah will not come until no remnant or survivor remains from this kingship. It must become null and void. A Jew who believes in the Creator of the Universe cannot be satisfied with anything otherwise… all the buildings built by the heretics and infidels in our holy land will be burnt and destroyed by the Messiah king." Is living in Israel permissible? In the meantime, the Satmar pamphlet also stipulated that living in the State of Israel is forbidden. In another section, the pamphlet implied that a rabbi need not be consulted before carrying out acts against Zionists, based on the model put forth by the biblical Pinhas who killed Jews who sinned. Regarding homes containing an Israeli flag, the pamphlet instructed Satmar followers not to enter. "Beyond any doubt, a house containing any reference to the flag must not be entered because it is a bastion of the forces of impurity." The Satmar rebbe wrote of the renewal of the Hebrew language is worse than speaking "languages of the nations" because changing the holy language is "contemptible, abominable, and impure." "It is completely forbidden to speak Hebrew because it is an extension of the actions of the heretics and infidels who destroy and ruin religion and thus acknowledges the heretics and infidels and their idol worship and is a violation of the entire Torah."

  49. From another correspondent:

I feel that the Shittah of the SR is Ma'aseh Satan. Of course I am a nobody compared to the SR. However, it you read what he wrote about Israel and the Lubavitcher it comes across as a mean-spirited person, who as he aged dug the rut deeper and deeper in his vitriol. I feel that one is not allowed to publish his thoughts on Israel and Lubavitch because it is Lashon Ho'Ra on a great Talmud Chacham that he can write what he did. Yet in the Charedi world these views are considered normal.

This Shittah should have been left to fade out. Then the only lasting memory of the Satmer would be his Torah and a community he built.

I believe that continuing this Shittah is destroying Klal Yisroel today.

The proper approach is that of Reb Simcha Wasserman, which was e-mailed to me from an Ash.com essay addressing the debate about the Holocaust and Zionism.

“I believe that more recently, Rav Simcha Wasserman zt"l had a positive take on it. Many people will acknowledge that it was history without precedent, beyond the norms of the regular flow of history - i.e., the yad of Hashem.”

We have a member in our Shul whose father did ask the SR to leave Hungary right before the war. The Satmer said no. The father on the advice of his own father, went to three other Gedolim in Hungary. Each one said go and we should be so fortunate to leave with you.

My way of handling the Shittah of the SR is to talk positively about Zionism and what it meant to the millions of Jews trapped in Europe from 1880 – 1945. Every chance I get, I mention Zionism is a positive light. That is my fight and I can do it as I am a Ba’al Habayis. You cannot.

My great–great grandfather wrote about the return to Israel in the early 1880’s in a beautiful manner. I will send you some of my writings and you can publish them if you desire.
