The time to renew PAI has truly arrived. We are pressed between racist Chardalim and endangering Charedim. We need a sane Charedism that is not mechallel Shem Shomayim on a daily basis. I am embarrassed to affiliate with any of the existing sectors. I recall the statement of Rabbi Shlomo Breuer zt"l, son in law of our teachr RSRH zt"l that only Torah Im Dereh Eretz will being about the Geulah. I know these words will have no effect, but that is not an exemption from stating them.

Rischa D'Araisa Season 2 Episode 21: REVEL-ling in Past Possibilities: How America would have been different had Rav Shimon Shkop accepted the post of Rosh Yeshiva at RIETS in 1929

Rischa D'Araisa Season 2 Episode 21: REVEL-ling in Past Possibilities: How America would have been different had Rav Shimon Shkop accepted the post of Rosh Yeshiva at RIETS in 1929

Rischa's second foray into speculative what-if scenarios begins with an elaborate set-up of the Lithuanian Yeshiva-American Money connection of the 1920's and the major role played by visionaries like Rabbi Dov Revel.

Rabbi Kivelevitz provides the salient specifics of the founding and flourishing of Yeshivas Shaar HaTorah in Grodno.

Rabbi Bechhofer confirms Kivelevitz's assessment of the unique skillset and persona that combined within Rav Shimon Yehuda Shkop Zt'l that made him the perfect catalyst for growth and quantitative advancement for the motivated Ben Torah of the early 20th Century and why the administration of Yeshivas Rabbeinu Yitzchak Elchanan made him their prime candidate in succeeding the tragically departed Rav Shlomo Polacheck, the Meitscheter Illui.

While in the real world, Rav Shimon heeded t, the Rischa duo sketches the arc of probabilities had he remained.

Kivelevitz and Bechhofer disagree over whether, sans Rav Moshe Soloveichick's influential role, his son, Rav Yoseph Dov, would have become the towering influential teacher and philosopher for American generations to come.

Bechhofer asks Kivelevitz to complete the fantasy with an alternate landing role for the under appreciated Gaon and Scholar, Rav Zelik Epstein, who as Rav Shimon's disciple and granddaughter's husband, might have wielded a role in Yeshiva University commensurate with his predilections and vision.

Stumped by a line in the Rosh. Any Ideas?

I am somewhat at a loss to understand what the Rosh means in Os  98 in the Orchos Chaim.

Sefaria has it:

צח. אַל תְּשַּׁבֵּחַ אִשָּׁה בְּיָפְיָהּ וּבְטוּב מַעֲשֶׂיהָ, פֶּן יְאַשְּׁרוּהָ הַשּׁוֹמְעִים

Rischa D'Araisa Season 2 Episode 20: Kovetz Hasharos U'Dimyonos-What if Rav Elchanan Wasserman had not died a martyr's death and had escaped to America?

Rischa D'Araisa Season 2 Episode 20: Kovetz Hasharos U'Dimyonos-What if Rav Elchanan Wasserman had not died a martyr's death and had escaped to America?

Beginning a new What if series on Jewish topics.

With a premise that significant alternate fiction is built on assiduous research and knowledge of the persons and milieu, Rabbi Kivelevitz states that he and Rabbi Bechhofer have to be steeped somewhat in the ideas and personage under discussion. As both of them as teenagers, were exposed to the Torah of Rav Elchanan Wasserman, his hashkofosand martyr's death, the speculation as to how America would have been different had he remained here from 1938 onwards seemed a project they could tackle.

Bechhofer claims that due to his hardline views as evidenced by his not allowing students to accept visas in 1939 offered by Yeshiva University and H.T.C., and the harsh rhetoric of the Ikvasa Demeshichaand his forceful personality he would have constricted the scope of Yeshiva life, and attacked aggressively institutions that would have allowed bochurim to attend college.

Kivelevitz describes Reb Elchanan as the prime figure to crystallize the modern concept of Daas Torah, as is apparent in the famous letter of Rav Eliyahu Dessler.

As he could claim to be the historical extender of Rav Chaim Brisker in learning, the Chofetz Chaim in Torah Hashkafa and Rav Chaim Ozer in communal leadership,

Figures such as Rav Aharon Kotler, Rav Moshe Feinstein and Rav Eliezer Silver would have been rendered less consequential by the alternate reality Reb Elchanan.

While Bechhofer might be correct that Reb Elchanan seemed to be one that would ban any unnecessary use of English in Yeshivos, Kivelevitz reveals that the great Rosh Yeshiva actually was proficient in a few languages and kept abreast of scientific advancements of the day.

The Rabbis discuss which work of Reb Elchanan can be considered his most important, Bechhofer believes that although his most famous contribution may be the chakira if migo is on account of ne'emanus or koach ha'ata'anathe has been the most influential, while Kivelevitz quoting Rav Moshe Heinemann, lists the Kovetz Haoros as demonstrating brilliance, the Divrei Sofrim showcases a Rosh Yeshiva treading into unusual territory that plumbed the nature of fealty to Rabbinic law.

Rischa D'Araisa Season 2 Episode 19: Facing up to the Insurrection Facts - Perspectives of Rebbitzen Bechhofer

Rischa D'Araisa Season 2 Episode 19: Facing up to the Insurrection Facts - Perspectives of First Lady Bechhofer - Humble Condemnations paired with a Reckoning of conscience

The program begins with a short tribute to Rav Yehudah Kelemer Zt"l, who passed away Erev Shabbos, with Rabbi Bechhofer highlighting his unmatched humility and middos and dedication to kiruv which obscured the niftar's greatness in lomdus and Halacha.

Rabbi Kivelevitz notes how Rav Kelemer's psakim and example led to the acceptance and respect for many heretofore marginalized members of Jewish society.

Based on her cogent statements on the attack on the Capitol, Bechhofer and Kivelevitz invite Rebbitzen Shani Bechhofer to comment on the misinformation and controversy surrounding the events on January 6th in Washington.

The three discussants share their thoughts as to whether the statements of disapproval and condemnation issued by Orthodox Rabbinical Organizations have gone far enough in demarking what should be our stand and public face. Kivelevitz claims that while glaringly obvious, the President should have been singled out by name.

Rebbetzin Bechhofer argues forcefully that Trump's remaining in office is a disgrace and could lead to more dangerous incidents and unethical political shenanigans.

She fears that an impeachment process, however, would cloud the real investigation that needs to happen and jarringly polarize the two parties in a way that strongly impedes further progress.

The Bechhofers are asked about the charges made by many that the rioters were treated with undue restraint that would never been afforded a BLM mob.

Kivelevitz further asks the couple to comment on the point made by some in the Orthodox community and beyond, that last summers riots were not condemned by all parties or aggressively dealt with, despite the great property loss and violence that was caused by the protesters.

The podcast ends with a look forward to next week's program, launching our series of deep dives into alternative histories.

The Rebbitzen on Current Events

By the Rebbitzen.

Articulated far better than anything I could compose!

Erev Shabbos Parshas Shemos
A few brief thoughts on Erev Shabbos.
1. A Yid in golus does not take part in a supposed revolution or insurrection. Especially if it is an attack against the government of a medinah shel chesed like the United States of America.
2. Social unrest/ instability has always been an unsafe condition for Jews. To gin it up is foolhardy at best.
3. Beware of conspiracy theories and conspiracy theorists. Anti-Semitism is the mother of all conspiracy theories. When people suspect secret plots by powerful hidden people to control the world, that’s just where they end up eventually. Note: Q-Anon is virulently anti-Semitic and violent. Look it up if you don’t believe me.
4. It is not patriotic to storm the capitol of your own country. It’s messed up.
a. Waving an American flag while smashing the windows of the Capitol doesn’t make it patriotic. Chanting “U.S.A.” while injuring cops with fire extinguishers, lead pipes, and pepper spray doesn’t make it patriotic.
b. American patriots do not wave Confederate flags or wear sweatshirts that say Camp Auschwitz.
5. Violence is not a legitimate form of “expressing frustration” just because other groups have also engaged in violence. So please stop deflecting.
a. It is not legitimate even if the media is unfair. It is not legitimate even if it is denounced by “libtards” or “thought police” or any other group you detest. It is not legitimate whether you are black or white, Republican or Democrat. Stop justifying it.
6. The rioters in the pair of marked-up photos circulating on the Internet have been identified. They are not Antifa activists. They are not foreign agents.
a. There is no evidence yet that any of the rioters are anything other than what they loudly declared themselves to be. Pretending otherwise may feel good, but it is not rooted in fact. It’s really important to be rooted in fact.
7. Many went to DC on January 6 simply to rally in support of the President. As always, it is important to distinguish between (a) protesters peacefully attending a rally, (b) crowds of thousands of trespassers who breached police barricades and illegally occupied the Capitol grounds, and (c) mobs of rioters who swarmed into the Capitol building, damaged property, compromised national security, and terrorized and threatened the safety of the people inside. It is wrong and escalatory to refer to everyone who participated as a terrorist. It is also wrong to dismiss the entire debacle as a peace-loving protest.
8. The January 6 attack on the US Capitol was a profound national security failure. Explosives, weapons, and zip ties were brought into the seat of legislation in this country while the entire House, Senate, and the VP were all in one building. Offices with classified information were ransacked. We will learn over time how it happened, probably via a commission set up to investigate. This is absolutely necessary.
9. Yes: There is such a thing as voting fraud. It is exceedingly difficult to pull off and is almost always caught by standard election security procedures – but it exists. We must keep getting smarter about preventing it. No: Suspicious circumstances, rumors and anecdotes, a theory about how it could easily have happened, the presence of the factors that could have allowed it to happen – none of these is evidence that voting fraud actually happened.
10. The infamous “statistical anomaly” proves that votes are not randomly distributed. That’s it. There is no mathematical proof of fake updates, no calculation of the probability of a stolen election. Although it has the aura of being unassailable because it is filled with numbers, mathematical terms, and equations, the anonymous anomaly article is a scam.
a. If you don’t believe me, I will explain in full. Or ask any mathematician or statistician who does not publish articles anonymously.
11. A state’s voting laws and legislative decisions are not treated as illegal unless a court rules them illegal. Shouting lawyers are irrelevant, whether they serve in Congress or represent a political campaign at rallies, mock trials, or actual courtrooms. The job of lawyers is to argue; the job of judges is to rule. They did.
12. No, judges didn’t dismiss cases without assessing the evidence. They responded to the actual case being made, each time. Read the legal briefs – which included the evidence - and the judicial decisions. They are all online. Don’t believe me; read them yourself. (e.g. https://punchbowl.news/wp-content/uploads/1.4.20-2020-Presidential-Election-Challenges-in-Arizona-Georgia-Michigan-Nevada-Pennsylvania-and-Wisconsin-and-Our-Const.pdf)
13. The myth of President Trump’s landslide 2020 victory exists in his brain. It didn’t happen. It’s not real.
14. Railing against the imaginary theft of an imaginary victory is pointless. Committing crimes to “avenge” that imaginary theft is delusional as well as criminal.
Good Shabbos.
Shani Bechhofer

BDE: Rabbi Kelemer Zt'l, Morah D'asra of YIWH (Updated: Levaya Details) | 5 Towns Central

BDE. A true nistar who would have ranked amongst the greatest Gedolim of the day, but his extraordinary anavah came before his breathtaking chochmoh. I would not be surprised if he were one of the Lamed Vav. A great inspiration to those of us who were zocheh to grow up in West Hempstead.

Rischa D'Araisa Season 2-Episode 18: Contemplating and Relishing Alternate Realities: President Trump - Rav Avigdor Miller Zt"l - Feinstein Family Fantasies

My partner, Reb Avremel, and I would like to solicit from our listeners other "alternate history" scenarios that you would be interested in our discussing on air. Please write ravkiv@gmail.com or comment on this post. Thanks!

Rischa D'Araisa Season 2-Episode 18: Contemplating and Relishing Alternate Realities: President Trump - Rav Avigdor Miller Zt"l - Feinstein Family Fantasies

The forty-five minute episode deals with three interrelated subjects.

The Rabbis begin the program debating whether it is correct to equate the wild charges of voter fraud and claim of a stolen election by the President's staunch supporters with the four years of declaring Trump's victory illegitimate by the Democrats and the media. Bechhofer rejects the inexact comparison which if repeated enough, obfuscates the terrible management of the country under Trump's helm.

Kivelevitz pressures Bechhofer to admit to achievements wrought by the administration in relations with the State of Israel and the advancements of peace in the region. He also gets his co-host's agreement that the three Supreme Court justices nominated by Trump will act as a barrier from the encroachments on religious liberty that the zeitgeist is demanding.

The episode then segues into a critique of the published response of Rav Avigdor Miller Zt"l as to why God is referred to in exclusively masculine terms. The late Rabbi's words reiterate tropes about women's roles in society that are distressing for the modern ear.

Bechhofer offers a more palatable theological answer that aligns with a mystic, yet non-misogynistic point of reference, while Kivelevitz makes the 21st century(2021) case specifically for women heads of state and female police officers.

The program concludes with a response to a listener of last week's entry, where it was implied that the Torah landscape would have been considerably altered had Rav Nota Greenblatt become the son-in-law of Rav Moshe Feinstein Zt"l. Kivelevitz describes an intriguing counter-scenario to what was by inserting the x-factor of the Gadol from Memphis.
