Daf Halachah - Shabbos 65a

Mishnah: Young girls may go out on Shabbos with threads, and even with slivers of wood through their ears...
Rashi explains that when the Mishnah says, ``and even with slivers,'' it means to teach us that although slivers worn in the ear are in no way ornamental (i.e., not a tachshit), and could therefore might have been regarded as prohibited burden, that nevertheless the girls are permitted to go out with these slivers. This is because it was customary for young girls who had had their ears pierced, but who would not wear earrings until they were olders, to put strings or slivers through their ears to prevent the holes closing up. Since this was the prevalent custom, the slivers are not considered a burden.
The Mishnah Berurah1 cites Rashi as the rationale for the Shulchan Aruch’s2 ruling in accordance with our mishnah. Rashi’s rationale is the basis of quite a few halachos l’ma’aseh. Since any customary manner in which one normally walks about is considered permissible, one need not wear a garment in its most “proper” manner in order that it should not be considered a burden, but rather in any manner in which it is customary to wear it (Shemiras Shabbos K’Hilchashah 18:4, note 22). Therefore, strictly speaking, even in a reshus horabbim, a suit jacket may be worn over one’s shoulders (i.e., with the sleeves hanging limp by the sides); one may wear gloves; a hand-muff (a fur tube in which one puts both hands); and ear-muffs.
There are, however, certain qualifications that are suggested by Shemiras Shabbos K’Hilchasah. He notes that all this is true only in cases in which there no reason to assume the item may fall and then might be carried in a reshus horabbim. Two examples that are discussed by the Poskim are: 1. A hat loosely worn atop a yarmulke (if the hat falls off, since the person is wearing a yarmulke he may come to carry the hat four amos)3; 2. loose-fitting slippers4 (note 23). Indeed, Shemiras Shabbos K’Hilchasah suggests being stringent even in the case of the jacket on the shoulders (note 24); and in the cases of the gloves and the hand-muff, sewing them on to one’s coat so that even if one comes to take them off it will not be considered carrying them in the normal manner.5 And although we generally do not walk in true reshuyos horabbim, nevertheless, it is laudable to be stringent6 (note 28).
