Tzimtzum K'Peshuto

1687-1743 (page 23 of 113)

Someone sent this to me as a source for the long-bandied, never-seen opinion that tzimtzum is k'pshuto, i.e. that Hashem literally vacated physical space He had previously occupied. In my opinion, he is just expressing the same perspective as the Nefesh HaChaim did years later, that we must operate as if the tzimtzum is real, even though, of course, it is not.

Toras Purim 5779 part 3, Shomrei HaSaf

Image result for bigthan and teresh

We mentioned in the previous post that Mordechai, from Binyomin, also represents the tikkun of Yosef. This is alluded to in the Megillah in that ביקרו is the gimatriya of יוסף בנימין.

Mordechai's tikkun as the third shomer ha'saf also fixed Binyomin's grave sin of Pilegesh b'Givah, for the dead woman was found with her hands on the saf (Shoftim 19:27).

The ultimate tikkun is when the three shomrei ha'saf in unison bring down the shefa from the nekudah of Hashem to the world. In Tanach the words are spelled שמר הסף. Assuming that a pei sofis
is 800, if you take three times שמר הסף you get:

(Yechezkel  35:7)

and

(Mishlei 3:25)

Now, of course, Purim leads into Pesach, where the doorposts were painted with הדם אשר בסף. But what does our saf, which is a doorway, have to do with that saf, which seems to be a vessel? Ah, but the Maharal in his Derashah l'Shabbos HaGadol writes:

Wow! It could also be that the tzuras ha'pesach consists of Hashem at the top and the three shomrei ha'saf as the sides and bottom.

But is Yosef connected to the connotation of vessel? Again, another sefer with which I am not familiar, but which is in the DBS database so it must be bar samcha, the Toldos Aharon writes:

Yes, indeed! (With the added benefit of an expanded explanation of the significance of the yud-vav.) The shomrei ha'saf are also the guardians of the kli machazik brocho which, as we know, is shalom (as stated in the last Mishnah in Shas), which is why Mordechai was a dover shalom (as stated in the last pasuk in the Megillah).

Mordechai had elements of Moshiach ben Yosef (Ish Yemini) and Moshaich ben Dovid (Ish Yehudi).
Perhaps if he had been ratzui to all his brethren, the ultimate redemption would have been achieved then and there. But that was not to be. But he brought to us a small measure of what the Toldos Aharon calls תענוג של השלמת שם הקדוש - The yud-vav.

(Megillah 11a)

Our Simchas Purim should be in the spirit of, כביכול, bringing about the תענוג שיש להבורא מישראל שהם מקבלים שפע של הבורא ב"ה - the samech-pei.

When we calculate the gimatria of בגתן תרש under the assumption that the nun sofis is 500, we get:

(Tehillim 119:54)

However we understand this strange Gemara (perhaps for a different time), it says (Sotah 35a):

Simchah must be used carefully, otherwise it is the sam ha'maves that Bigsan and Seresh wanted to deliver to Achashverosh!

We should be zocheh to the simchah of:

Toras Purim 5779 part 2, Shomrei HaSaf

The Gemara (Sanhedrin 10b and elsewhere) explains that the deliberation on declaring a leap year begins with three dayanim, continues with five and is completed with seven, because this corresponds to the three shomrei ha'saf, the five of the ro'ei pnei ha'melech and the complete number of seven ro'ei pnei ha'melech. (In Birkas Kohanim there are 3,5,7 words respectively in the three berachos.)

The Maharal in Chiddushei Aggados there explains that a king is a nekudah, a "oneness." The three shomrei ha'saf are a kav, a line, which is captured by the number three because a line must have a beginning, a middle and an end. The line only has one dimension. He goes on to explain the five as two dimensions (the point in the middle and four sides) and the seven as three dimensions (the point in the middle and six sides

Now, in the sefer Ahavas Shalom, with which I am not familiar, but which must be reliable because it is in the DBS database, we find this remarkable passage:

Just as there is a name of Hashem that is incomplete associated with Purim, at the end of Parashas Beshalach, there is a name of Yosef that is incomplete associated with Purim. Only the name of Hashem is missing the last two letters, and the name of Yosef is missing the first two letters.

In the name of Hashem, the missing vav represents Yosef, the pipeline of middas yesod that is cut off, While the missing heh represents Dovid, the tikkun olam b'malchus Sh-ddi that has not yet occurred.

(On a tangent, Yosef in gimatriya is 156. The 156th pasuk in the Torah is, I believe, the first time the word bris is mentioned.)

Although the Ahavas Shalom associates Mordechai's tikkun of the name of Yosef with Moshe Rabbeinu, I would suggest that the tikkun is specifically through Binyamin's middah, parallel to Shaul's reign prior to Dovid. This is, of course, why all three (Yosef, Binyamin and Mordechai) are associated with the word tzaddik, tzaddik yesod olam).

To be continued...

About Goyim: Notes on Rabbi Micha Berger's Religious Dilemma

There is significant follow up on the issues at Reb Micha's original post,
https://www.facebook.com/notes/micha-berger/religious-dilemma/10154373582687263

Important points I added are:

1. I forgot to mention that a goy can only bring a Korban Olah, not a Shelamim. This is very much linked, and really is a fundamental source, for the dichotomy I presented.

2. I was myself somewhat guilty of imprecision in terminology. "Taharah" as I meant it is not Halachic Taharah, of course. Rather, it is the Nekiyus, Perishus and, ultimately the Taharah of the Mesillas Yesharim. That is the highest level open to a goy. From the Chassidus of the Mesillas Yesharim and beyond is only available to Jews.

Toras Purim 5779 part 1, Shomrei HaSaf

We were mevarech Chodesh Adar Sheni, it's time.

This is an introduction. I am NOT yet sure where I'm going from here...

Integral to Purim is the plot of Bigsan and Seresh.

      They were the שומרי הסף.

So there were two שומר הסףs.

Two times שומר הסף is in gematriya 1382 (691x2).

This is the same gematriya as:

      and as

      Hmm...

Now, in Melachim II  25:18 there are three Shomrei HaSaf, from which the Gemara in Sanhedrin 10b derives that the consideration of whether to add an Adar II to make a leap year begins with three people, before going up to five an then to seven.
So who was the third Shomer HaSaf?
Esther Rabbah (6:13) give the answer: Mordechai!

Clothing

Kohen Gadol- Toddler T4

Part of a talk I gave to the Shalhevet Girls High School in Vancouver,
where our daughter Rebbitzen Federgrun is the Menaheles.
Summarized by Rebbitzen Federgrun.

A person's clothing send a subtle signal of what they represent and whom they respect in this world. When we dress a certain way, we tend to act a certain way. In Judaism, we generally don't have uniforms as part of our religious routines. We may have a special article of clothing to wear at specific times, but the only place/time where we find a "uniform" was in the Beis Hamikdash. Rabbi Soloveitchik once said, "Judaism doesn't believe in rituals for the sake of ritual. Everything we do has a deeper meaning and reasoning behind it." Yet, again, in the Beis Hamikdash, there were rituals - and they meant a lot! Why was the Beis Hamikdash different in these regards?

There's an idea in Kabbalah of hod - splendor. There is hod of Hakadosh Baruch Hu in the world He has created. We say in Barchi Nafshi, "Hod v'hadar lavashta - You (Hashem) donned splendor and glory." This middah of hod is one Hashem used in creating the world. Thus, when we look at the amazing world around us, we are, in a sense, seeing that which Hashem wears to show us His majesty.

When we see hod, we feel awe. We recognize the greatness of what we are seeing and experiencing, and we want to associate with it.

The Beis Hamikdash is supposed to be the place where Hashem's hod is appreciated most. Only there were kohanim given a "uniform" to wear: the bigdei kehunah. And there we experienced religious rituals. The reason these could happen in the Beis Hamikdash, is because the Beis Hamikdash itself was the pinnacle of kedusha in the world. Therefore its hod could be accurately recognized as the splendor of Hashem. Instead of focusing on the externals, those in its proximity focused on the spirituality of what was happening around them.

This week we read Parshas Shekalim, which tells us how each Jew brought half a shekel to be used for the services in the Beis Hamikdash. The Sfas Emes explains that the idea of mishenichnas Adar marbin b'simchas begins with the reading of Parshas Shekalim. This money was brought with joy, and that joy carries through the generations until today. Part of the great joy in giving 1/2 shekel lies in its representation that we give half, and Hashem gives half, and we meet Him in the middle. So the joy of Adar is the joy of getting close to Hakadosh Baruch Hu.

Everything we see, do, hear, etc has an impact upon us - consciously or unconsciously. We aren't perfect, but we should strive in all we do to increase our simcha by doing things that bring us closer to Hashem.
