Actually the Mesorah is זכר with tzayray under zayin. See Tanachs Ketter, Koren, R’ Mordechai Breuer. Hopefully no one will ever DARE retrofit our chumashim by printing segol under the zayin.
The simple explanation in Baba Basra was that Yoav’s rebbe taught him mistakenly zayin with segol — which means “males of Amalek” — instead of tsayray which means “remembrance of.” Hard to imagine his rebbe confused “zochor” with “zaycher” or “zecher.” כך שמעתי בימי חורפי במאה הקודמת
Of course every Baal Koreh must do as their Rebbe, Rosh Yeshiva or LROR directs.
I would vote against. Starting to question the Baalei Mesorah is a slippery slope we really don't want to head down.
